Route Management
Routes are the core of Itinera. This guide covers creating, managing, and completing routes.
Route Lifecycle
Every route follows a status workflow:
DRAFT → ACTIVE → COMPLETED
→ CANCELLED
| Status | Meaning | Editable? |
|---|---|---|
| Draft | Route created, not yet dispatched | Yes |
| Active | Route dispatched, truck is en route | Limited (assignment only) |
| Completed | Delivery finished | Read-only |
| Cancelled | Route was cancelled | Read-only |
Creating a Route
- Click New Route from the sidebar or top bar.
- Fill in the required fields:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Equipment Type | RGN, Reefer, or Van — filters the available truck list |
| Truck | Select from your Samsara fleet. Selecting a truck auto-assigns its paired driver. |
| Start State | US state where the route begins |
| End State | US state where the route ends |
| Notes | Optional free-text field |
- Click Create Route.
The route name is auto-generated as "[Truck Name]: [Start State] to [End State]" and the route opens in Draft status.
If you see a warning that Samsara is not connected, the truck list will be empty. Ask your administrator to configure the Samsara API key in Settings.
Route Detail Page
The route detail page has a full-screen map and a resizable side panel with five tabs.
Map
- Shows the planned route polyline (blue line on the map)
- Displays the truck's live GPS position (updates automatically)
- Fuel stops appear as markers when viewed in the Fuel Stops tab
Route Tab (Waypoints)
Add and manage waypoints for the route:
- Search for a location using the geocode search field (start typing, suggestions appear after 3 characters).
- Waypoints are categorized by type:
- Origin (green) — starting point
- Stop (blue) — intermediate pickup/delivery
- Fuel Stop (red fuel icon) — planned fuel stop
- Destination (red flag) — final delivery point
- Use the "Use truck current location as origin" button to set the origin to the truck's live GPS position.
- Delete any waypoint with the trash icon.
The Avoid Tolls toggle adjusts the route calculation to prefer toll-free roads.
Fuel Stops Tab
Displays Love's fuel stations near the planned route with pricing.
- Sort by: Route distance (closest to route path), Price (cheapest first), or Truck distance (closest to the truck's current GPS)
- Each stop shows: city, state, price per gallon, and distance from route
- Click a stop to highlight it on the map
- Filter by brand or state using the filter chips
- An inline fuel gauge shows the assigned truck's current fuel level
Assignment Tab
View and change the driver and vehicle assigned to the route.
- Shows the current driver and vehicle with a live fuel level badge:
- Red — below 25%
- Amber — below 50%
- Green — 50% or above
- Click Change Assignment to search for a different driver or vehicle. The search covers both drivers and vehicles simultaneously.
- Selecting a driver auto-populates its paired vehicle (and vice versa).
Deviations Tab
Shows off-route events for this route (auto-refreshes every 30 seconds).
- Active deviations appear at the top with a red badge and animated pulse
- Past deviations show: start time, end time, duration (minutes), max distance from route (miles), and start address
Activity Tab
A timeline of all actions taken on this route (created, dispatched, assignment changed, completed, etc.).
Dispatching a Route
When a Draft route is ready:
- Open the route detail page.
- Verify waypoints, driver assignment, and fuel stops.
- Click Generate Route.
The route status changes to Active and deviation monitoring begins automatically (checked every 30 seconds).
Completing or Cancelling
| Action | Button | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Complete | Mark Complete | Status changes to Completed. Route becomes read-only. |
| Cancel | Cancel Route | Status changes to Cancelled. Route becomes read-only. |
| Delete | Delete Route | Only available for Draft routes. Permanently removes the route. |
Routes List
The routes list page (/routes) provides a filterable, sortable, paginated table of all routes.
Filters
- Search — text search across route number, name, origin, and destination
- Status — All, Draft, Active, Completed, or Cancelled
- Driver — searchable dropdown of Samsara drivers
- Vehicle — searchable dropdown of Samsara vehicles
- Date range — presets (Last 7/30/90 days) or custom From/To dates
Click any column header to sort. Active filter chips appear above the table with an X to clear each one.
Sharing Filtered Views
All filter state is saved in the URL. Copy the browser URL to share a specific filtered view with a colleague — they'll see the same filters applied.
Identifying Off-Route Trucks
Routes with an active deviation show a red "OFF ROUTE" badge in the list, making it easy to spot trucks that need attention.
